Unlike his novels, they keep his defects theorising, sloppy narration at bay and his strengths on display. View 1 comment. This is a review for the Penguin edition. Before this collection, I'd only read Lawrence's The Rainbow.

I was really impressed with his scenic passages and deep understanding of the human psyche and emotions. A local bookstore owner recommended I read his short stories, as he preferred them over Lawrence's novels. I can definitely see why he loves them. There is even a fascinating story suggesting a homosexual attraction within army ranks, which must have been controversial for Lawrence's time.

Lawrence has such a poetic, beautiful way of exploring the human psyche and writing sympathetic narrators. I felt very invested in the characters of these stories. I felt as confused at the wife's grieving thoughts in "The Odour of Chrysanthemums" as she did.

Lawrence's writing is very evocative and sensory, which makes reading his work a captivating experience. I highly recommend his stories to newcomers of his work, fans of his novels, or readers who enjoy classics.
